Philip Day

Philip Day

Philip is a solicitor and partner with Bournemouth law firm Horsey Lightly Fynn. He has been a NOEA council member for 6 years and is one of the association’s vice presidents.

He describes his professional practice as “being mostly about sleaze - drinking, gambling and dancing the night away, not necessarily fully dressed.” Having trained with HM Customs and Excise as it then was ("that was mainly sleaze too – drug smuggling, illicit stills, illegal betting and pornography") he spent the next 18 years in Reading. Accidents of fate dictated that he graduated from being a criminal lawyer to become a licensing specialist ("it was better than spending my nights in the police cells") before being persuaded to move to sunny Bournemouth ("it was nothing to do with the money").

Over the last 9 years, Philip has developed a particular expertise in the licensing of outside events and all that goes with it from a legal perspective. He has lectured nationally on the Licensing Act and clients include the Badger Brewery, the Great Dorset Steam Fair, Coral (the bookmakers), various Local authorities and increasingly, groups of local residents who have been kept awake once too often by the antics of those leaving a local hostelry.

Philip intends to use his participation in the table top exercise to highlight recent changes to the law, particularly in the context of responsibility for when things go wrong ("not that they ever do of course").

Ben Courtnell, Redbull

Ben has worked in the event industry for the last 8 years, starting off at Pen Productions, where he worked on a range of events from Royal engagements to product launches and parties with brands such as BSkyB, Sainsburys, and Arcadia Group. He then moved to Hyperactive events, working on amongst others the Vodafone event account including The Vodafone Summer Ball. He also became part of the Formula One Vodafone Hospitality & Event team responsible for activation across the full F1 season.

This was followed by work at Jack Morton Worldwide as a Project Manager on a wide range of events nationally and internationally, clients including Nokia, Lexus, Philips and HP.

He has spent the last three years working as Event Marketing Manager for Red Bull in the UK, helping shape and produce their ground breaking events programme. During this time he has delivered a range of consumer facing events from Red Bull Air Race and Red Bull Manny Mania to managing their regional events in sports and motorsports. He is currently working on the upcoming Red Bull 2010 events.
